AS MEN'S HEALTH editors, we’re constantly working out year-round. But come spring and summer, we trade our treadmills for runs through Central Park, stair climbers for hikes upstate, and gym pools for the ocean. The only drawback to exercising outside: exposing your skin to harmful UV rays that cause sunburn, age spots, and wrinkles. That’s why dermatologists recommend protecting yourself with sunscreen for working out.

I will admit, when it comes to outdoor physical activity, I have been burned before—in more ways than one. Sure, CrossFit in the park made me contort in various painful and, I’d argue, unnatural ways, but the burns from not protecting my skin were just as bad. Not to mention, potentially more serious. Dermatologist and founder of Remedy, Dr. Muneeb Shah, MD, warns that working out in the sun without SPF increases the risk of severe sunburn and skin cancer, as well as advancing signs of premature aging like wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.
Dermatologist, Dr. Gabriella Vasile, MD, also notes that the most desirable outcome of being in the sun can be damage in disguise. “Remember, even a tan is considered sun damage to the skin,” she says. Thankfully, this risk can be severely minimized with the help of one simple habit: applying sunscreen. But don’t go grabbing your daily SPF moisturizer or beachday sunscreen, protection when exercising requires a few additional considerations.
What to Consider
Sweatproof
Every formula on this list is water-resistant, so your sunscreen stays on when you're running in the rain or swimming. Even better, look for options that are sweatproof to counteract the perspiration that comes hand in hand with exercising under the sun. Before any workout, think about how long you’ll be outside—most sweatproof SPFs protect for around an hour, ranging from 40 to 80 minutes.
SPF Level
Whether you’re running a marathon or walking to your mailbox, you should be wearing SPF every time you step outside. Dr. Shah recommends SPF of at least 30 when working out, as this will protect against 97 percent of the sun’s UV rays. To block 98 percent of UV rays, choose SPF 50—or go with SPF 70 for 98.5 percent protection. Dr. Vasile adds that the sun’s intensity peaks between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., so it's best to exercise before or after that window.
Mineral or Chemical
According to Dr. Shah, many people prefer mineral sunscreens because they’re less likely to run into your eyes during a workout. See, they’re made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that form a physical barrier on the skin to reflect UV rays. This sturdy layer resists water, sweat, and even friction, so it stays in place and is less likely to smudge or run down your face. He adds that mineral sunscreens are also less likely to cause allergic reactions or irritate sensitive skin.
However, Dr. Shah says that mineral options are more likely to leave a white cast than chemical formulas, and feel heavier on the skin. Chemical sunscreens protect skin by absorbing UV rays to reduce free radical formation (aka unstable molecules that damage skin), while blending easily into the skin for quick absorption, says Dr. Vasile.
How We Selected
For the past year, I have been testing sunscreens and SPF moisturizers while running, hiking, and other outdoor exercises to determine which are the best options for working out. I also consulted with a panel of dermatologists on what to look for in a sweatproof sunscreen and which products they recommend. Based on their advice and my research, I put more than 25 sunscreens for working out to the test, analyzing each one’s value, feel, longevity, and effectiveness at sun protection. Following the extensive trials, I landed on these seven SPFs as the best sunscreen for working out.
Pros
Reef safe
Thick, but absorbs quickly
Never runs or smudges
Fragrance-free
Cons
Can leave residue when over-applied
Over $35
Leave it to the GOAT surfer to develop the GOAT exercise SPF. This mineral sunscreen—developed by former pro surfer Kelly Slater—dispenses thick, but absorbs into skin quickly, offering intense protection. I recently used this on a ten-mile run, which I took during Dr. Vasile’s ill-advised midday, peak sun exposure at noon. It never let up.
Waterproof for 80 minutes and sweatproof for 40, it never ran into my (quite sweaty) eyes. I’ve used it before hopping in the pool as well, and it delivers on that 80-minute promise. Not surprising, as Dr. Vasile says, this water-resistant SPF is formulated specifically for active guys. But it’s also so much more. Peak Performance is fragrance-free, so it’s safe for sensitive skin. While it is a mineral sunscreen, it barely leaves a cast.
If you don’t overuse (dispense no more than a dime-sized amount) and take a few extra seconds to rub it into skin, there is virtually no residue. It’s also the most eco-friendly option on this list. Packaged in 100 percent recycled plastic, and formulated without any common sunscreen ingredients known to harm coral reefs, such as oxybenzone and octinoxate. It’s the best mineral sunscreen, best sunscreen for surfing and watersports, and, by far, the best SPF for the environment.

Neutrogena Sport Face Sunscreen Oil-Free Sunscreen SPF 70+

Pros
Highest SPF level on this list
Non-comedogenic formula
Non-greasy
Cheapest option on this list
Cons
Leaves white cast
Smaller container, 2.5 oz
The most annoying drawback of wearing sunscreen is that it can result in acne for those sensitive because these products can clog pores and lead to breakouts. This is due to comedogenic ingredients, like isopropyl myristate and isocetyl stearate, as well as natural oils like coconut oil or cocoa butter, that trap oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria on the skin, blocking pores. Neutrogena avoids this common negative with its oil-free formula, free of comedogenic ingredients.
This all results in a non-greasy, lightweight cream that effortlessly blends into skin. Not to mention, its 70 SPF level is the highest on this list, so you won’t find stronger protection against UV rays. It’s also armed with three percent avobenzone, which absorbs UV rays and converts them into less harmful heat. Dr. Vasile adds that given its oil-free formula that doesn’t clog pores, it’s also ideal for those who sweat the most. This is all on top of the fact that at $10, it’s the best value on this list.

Best Sunscreen for Working Out for Sensitive Skin
La Roche-Posay La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Pro-Sport SPF 50
Pros
Formulated for dry and sensitive skin
Fragrance-free
Paraben-free
Non-greasy
Cons
Can leave a subtle white cast
La Roche-Posay is our go-to skincare brand for dry or sensitive skin, so it’s only natural that our testers with easily irritated skin looked to the brand for UV protection. And this SPF did not disappoint. Dermatologist, Dr. Anna Chacon, MD, says that the brand’s Anthelios UV Pro-Sport is also great for workout planning, as it’s non-greasy, so it won’t feel shiny after application. Plus, it’s water and sweat-resistant for 80 minutes.
Dr. Vasile adds that it contains La Roche-Posay’s Cell-Ox Shield, a blend of powerful antioxidants and broad-spectrum protectors that help fight skin damage-causing free radicals as it protects against UV rays. Not to mention, the formula includes a hefty dose of glycerin for extra hydration.

Pros
Protection up to four hours
Unscented
Reef safe
Cons
Despite lasting for four hours, only water-resistant for 40 minutes
At $50, the most expensive option on this list
For activities that Skinnies is best applied, there is one that comes to mind for Dr. Vasile: running. She says it’s perfect for excessive sweating, as it absorbs easily and dries fully in under two minutes, so there is no risk of smudging or eye irritation. While dermatologists still recommend applying every two hours, this sunscreen is water-resistant for four hours, by far the longest timetable on this list.
For this reason, I constantly reach for Skinnies when I’m heading out for a long run or taking an aimless hike because if I get caught up in the adventure of it and forget to reapply, my skin will still be protected. It’s also unscented for sensitive skin, and a little bit goes a long way when applying. This is especially welcomed as Skinnies is on the more expensive side at $50. Sure, 50 bucks feels like a lot to throw at an SPF, but given how long this stuff lasts, it’s well worth the investment.

Pros
Formulated to protect against sun damage-induced signs of aging
Doubles as a daily, anti-aging moisturizer
Smooth, quick application
Ultra-hydrating
Cons
Not sweatproof
Dr. Vasile calls this a great all-in-one product for those who prefer a simple regimen, pointing to the hydrating ingredients in its formula that help soothe and protect the skin. Hard to disagree, as this is the most moisturizing sunscreen we encountered during our testing. Men’s Health Deputy Editor of Commerce, Christian Gollayan, uses this SPF religiously and confirms it doesn’t cause breakouts or leave any white cast.
Fueled by a trio of anti-aging ingredients—white tea to neutralize free radical damage, peptides to repair damaged skin, and squalane to hydrate—this SPF doubles as a skin firming powerhouse. That being said, when it comes to exercise, it’s best to utilize Dynamic Skin Recovery for light exercise, like walks, short jogs, or low-impact hiking. With the attention given to moisturizing and anti-aging agents, the SPF doesn’t hold up during more rigorous workouts and heavy sweating.

Pros
TSA-friendly
Clear application
Unscented and safe for sensitive skin
Free of any parabens, phthalates, or sulfates
Cons
Easy to over apply
Can look and feel oily when too much is applied
There are a few reasons to switch to a sunscreen stick, rather than lotion or moisturizer. They offer a more convenient, targeted application with less residue than creamier options. Oars and Alps Go Stick is the best version of these boons, and then some. It’s my go-to sunscreen whenever I’m in a rush (which is often) as the SPF quickly glides across the skin, absorbing in seconds. It’s unscented and free of any harsh parabens, phthalates, or sulfates, so it never irritates my sensitive skin.
If you’re especially annoyed by residue or white casing, this SPF is the clearest option on this list. In fact, the first few times I used it, I was nervous it wasn’t dispensing at all. This stick is also active in my grooming travel routine, as it’s impossible to spill and TSA-approved. The ingredient quartet of jojoba oil, sunflower oil, to moisturize, alpine caribou moss, and vitamin E feels soothing and moisturizing on the skin. However, while it does list 80 minutes of protection, I found it was closer to an hour when exercising. Still, a great option for busy folks, frequent travelers, or both.

Pros
Formulated for use on face and body
Fast absorbing
No residue
Safe for sensitive skin
Cons
Rosemary scent may be overpowering for some
Dr. Chacon loves this sweat-resistant option because it’s fast-absorbing, lightweight, and leaves no residue or casing, noting that all of which makes it a great on-the-go option. When it comes to full-body application, Supergoop is truly superb. Its quick absorption allows you to spread it across arms, legs, chest, and back quickly without worrying about whether you’ve rubbed it in sufficiently. Dr. Chacon adds that it’s also a solid option for those with sensitive skin due to the lack of any oxybenzone and octinoxate in its formula (two common irritants). “It will nourish your skin as well as protect it,” she says.
