I have VSP and my husband went to get his glasses (frames and lenses) and the frames should have been covered as it had been over 2 years since he had new frames. I pay over $324.00 per year for coverage. VSP does not cover any of my glasses/lenses because they are extraordinarily unusual. That said, I did expect VSP to cover most of the cost of my husband's stuff. They covered $70.00 ($69.00 and change).
I called and asked and was told that the low coverage was because we went to Costco for our glasses. Nowhere in the plan document that my employer provides to describe coverage does it say "unless this is Costco then all coverages will be cut to next to nothing". There is no distinguishing verbiage for places like Costco. So - does it make sense to pay over $324.00 per year and only get $70.00 or so benefits? No it does not. I will be dropping VSP for their poor coverage as well as their inaccurate "plan document." PS - not submitting a receipt because it has personal information that I don't want on the internet.

VSP said the examination was free but Visionworks charged me an extra 35 dollars. Moreover, they did it without telling me anything before the examination. Besides, you cannot benefit from discounts when you have insurance. Therefore, you pay more than you spend on VSP. In fact, it is all a scam.

VSP VISION Through WellSense. They can only give 3 providers over the phone. Said they were 25 miles from my location. One was 51 minutes away and booking out 5 months. Told her that I had already called them. She gave me one that was over an hour away. Argued that they were within 25 miles from me. The 2nd was 45 minutes away and third was actually 20 minutes away. Would not give me any more. Wish I would have known how difficult it is to find coverage in my area with WellSense and their incompetent companies

Beware!! Don't use this company unless you are absolutely SURE you can find a frame that suits your face at an in-network company, and to clarify a VSP benefit!! Figure all of that out BEFORE you buy their insurance. Because I could not find a small frame that fits my face, I had to go out of network. My total cost was over $500, and VSP only reimbursed me for $120. However, the "insurance" cost me over $200! What a complete ripoff!!!! Date of experience: July 23, 2024.

This company needs to update their applications to access my account, both online and over the phone. I am NEVER able to access my account by putting in my date of birth, last 4 digits of my social, address or phone number. Absolutely ridiculous! When I finally get through to an agent, they are complexly rude telling me I need my member ID and that is the only way for them to find me in the system. This happens every time.
Online, the system says it doesn't "recognize" my information. Very interesting because they have zero problems in taking money from my bank account. I will be dropping this coverage, it's not worth it but mostly because of the customer service. Not worth my time. Get it together, fix your applications, in this day and age there is NO reason I cannot access my account with ease.

I have serious doubts VSP is worth the money. In my recent interaction with VSP, I discovered that VSP is not transparent about their Out-of-network benefits and that their in-network providers charge inflated prices that essentially negate the value of having VSP insurance. When buying prescription glasses, VSP beneficiaries are likely to pay a similar amount for new glasses and lens irrespective of whether they go "in-" or "out-" of-network. Here is my recent (June 2024) experience which considers costs over a two year period as this is the frequency by which frames can be covered.
After getting eye-exams covered by our health insurance, my wife and I recently bought prescription sunglasses this year for a total cost of $763. We will receive $250 in reimbursem*nt as these were both out-of-network purchases each receiving $125 reimbursem*nt ($70 for frames, $55 for lens). The total cost after reimbursem*nt is $513. So VSP is saving us $250 dollars on these new sunglasses. We pay $22/mo or $264 per year through payroll deduction. Therefore, over 2 years we pay ~$528 to VSP. In total, the cost of VSP for 2 years w a purchase of two pairs of prescription sunglasses was $1041. So what would we have paid if we didn't have VSP? In brief, we would have spent $763 and therefore are spending $280 more every two years by having VSP. YIKES!
Just to be thorough, for those that believe that an in-network purchase would be more favorable, I can only say that the in-network price of $840 was quoted for the same sunglasses that I bought for $473 from Ray-Bans. They were the identical pair of frames by model number and I got the price quoted to me right after my eye exam. If VSP were to reimburse us the full difference for going "in-network" (which is not the case based on their published in network coverage rates), we would still be losing money to VSP.
I was not aware of the lower out-of-network coverage ($70 vs $260 for frames) at the time of purchase. I learned this after getting the reimbursem*nt and then calling to clarify. They admitted they do not disclose the lower "out-of-network" coverages on their website. I asked why, but they did not chose to answer. The most disappointing aspect of this entire experience is that, by going to Ray-Ban, I ultimately saved VSP money instead of saving me money. I will not be signing up for VSP anymore.

To me VSP is just not worth it, at least if you're buying a plan yourself. Not sure if benefits are better if you get this from an employee. They show you all of the benefits on their site, but in those they do not tell you those are all "in network" benefits. You must go "in network" which again was not shown in the initial offering, nor when I spoke to them on the phone. What I also found is that if you go "in network" both eye exams and glasses are more expensive than let's say a Costco retail place. So will they cover more for their "in network" stores? Yes, but the prices for both exams and glasses are much more too. We are talking $150 exam at Costco vs $250 for one of their participating ODs. Same for glasses. Costco offers a lot of the additional coatings and lens types already built into their cost. It is much cheaper than a regular optical. Your out of pocket cost will be a lot higher, even if you go "in network".
So when I went to Costco and got an eye exam from an OD, they only covered part of that, not the full allowance. Then I got a pair of Oakley prescription glasses, again they only cover part of that, not the full allowance. So once I was all done, I have overpaid by over $100. I got zero benefits from VSP, other than them getting an extra $100 from me. It would have been cheaper for me to just do everything directly with Costco for $400. If you are considering VSP, I encourage you to ask them the questions for coverage "in network" vs "out of network" and get estimates from your OD and optical place before purchasing that insurance. Again, from my experience it is not worth getting at all. Feels more like a bait and switch to me.

Terrible!! They only pay $125 for contacts every 2 years!!! So you are only allowed a 1 year supply at the optometrist but they only pay every 2 years??!! This is ridiculous!!! Dropping them ASAP. I cannot believe that the hospital chose such a terrible vision company for its employees!!

VSP is the worse insurance company you can find. They didn't pay for my checkup/prescription, they paid 70usd for prescription glasses (what costs that now a days?), denied prescription sunglasses and they didn't pay for contacts either, because they already paid 70usd for glasses in one year. When I told them that my prescription changed, and that's why I needed to change both, she said well that's the policy. Can't wait to change companies.

Worthless. Absolutely worthless. My healthcare benefits are supposed to cover glasses/contacts for my kids. I am forwarded from my health insurance website to the VSP website where it gives me an error immediately. I called them and had to create accounts for my kids in order to sign in. I signed in and can't find my benefits on their site. We have called them and asked about that and they basically say too bad. We had our insurance agent contact them and they told him the same thing. I tried to sign in again today with my kid's account and it won't let me sign in again. Waste of time and money.
